Honesty is the Best Policy: 5 Reasons to be Upfront with a Potential Employer

shutterstock_400563190editd-768x348

We’ve all been there at some point; we find an interesting job vacancy, decide to give it a shot and send our latest resume, sometimes with a few harmless ‘tweaks’ or ‘embellishments’. Whether it’s a little white lie about our previous salary or about a minor brush with the law during careless college days, it is safe to say that we’ve all opted to add or withhold certain information on our resume to make it more appealing to the company we are looking to join. However, if you think that misleading information is going to go unnoticed, think again, because companies and organizations are becoming more aware than ever of dishonest applicants and are taking the necessary measures to avoid hiring the wrong people. With that in mind, here are five compelling reasons to fully disclose your accurate job history, academic credentials, criminal background and other relevant details upfront:

The company’s HR personnel are going to find out anyway

A growing number of employers now run background checks that cover education, employment, financial and criminal history in order to avoid the many risks resulting from fraud. So if you’ve been dishonest, it’s just a matter of time before you’re called out.

Lying on your resume could land you a job you’re unqualified for

Assuming that your inaccuracy slipped through the cracks and you got the job, you may find yourself in a position where you lack certain skills you claimed you have, possibly resulting in the termination of your contract. You can also make your application look more trustworthy by using DataFlow to verify your documents which tells your potential employer how authentic your credentials are.

Be wary of former employers

Be careful of what past employers may say about you, especially if you are changing jobs within the same industry or domain. For example, if you were laid off for whatever reason, be upfront about it and before it gets leaked on the grapevine.

Tell the truth about your previous salary

This is the oldest trick in the book for job applicants who want to negotiate higher pay, and employers will see right through it by simply making a call to your former HR department.

When you disclose, you control the narrative

The bottom line is that when you lay all your cards on the table, you get a chance to control the outcome by explaining the situation instead of your potential employer drawing their own conclusions.

Why do you need to transfer your DataFlow report to TrueProfile.io?

If you already have your positively verified PSV report with the DataFlow Group before – the good news is that you can transfer it over to our new service TrueProfile.io. Four Secrets to Smart Hiring

For a company or organization to stay ahead of the pack, implementing a smart hiring process is of paramount importance to avoid recruiting the wrong people and reduce the risk of damaging reputational and financial consequences. In order to hire qualified professionals that are a suitable fit for the job, make sure to bear in mind the following points:

It all starts with the job description

A poorly written job description is a sure-fire way to attract unsuitable candidates and scare away the right ones. For this reason, make sure the vacancy post includes the necessary job requirements and highlights what the company has to offer, while keeping it brief and straightforward.

Take advantage of social media

In today’s digital age, utilizing channels such as LinkedIn, Facebook and even Instagram are key to ensuring your job post is being actively circulated, while coming across as a company that is progressive and follows digital trends – thus helping you draw smart applicants.

Never underestimate the importance of soft skills

In addition to having the relevant knowledge and professional experience required for the job, considering the candidate’s personality is crucial to gauging how they would handle certain social situations. Technical aspects of a job can easily be taught or acquired, whereas emotional intelligence, communication skills and social skills cannot.

Check their social media profiles

Not to downplay the importance of embedding a proper background screening program at the core of your recruitment process, but checking a candidate’s social media accounts can provide further insight on the person you are hiring.

Top Tips for Nailing Your Next Interview

Frame-37

While browsing the Internet, it is highly likely that you have at some point come across one of many articles about the things you shouldn’t do during an interview. These could range from being late or not finding more about the company beforehand to wearing jeans or chewing gum; the list goes on. But what about the things you should do? To make a good impression and convince the person you are interviewing that you are a good match for the job, do the following to boost your chances for success:

Come prepared

Research the company to learn more about what they do and get a feel of their corporate culture, then go through the job requirements and be prepared to demonstrate why you would be a suitable fit. Also, mentally review anticipated questions and rehearse what you plan to say, then be prepared to discuss your resume, whether it be previous responsibilities, acquired skills or gaps in employment. On another note, many companies today may require you to undergo a background check as part of the interviewing and hiring process. Visit our blog to learn all you need to know!

Make a good first impression

This begins with your attire. Dress the part for the position you are applying to, making sure your clothes are appropriate, neat and fit well. Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and a welcoming smile, and maintain regular eye contact throughout. It is also important to show energy and enthusiasm, while keeping your answers concise, straightforward and professional. At the end of the interview, don’t forget to thank your interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest in the position.

Highlight your skills

During the conversation, describe certain situations or challenges you faced in your previous job, the measures you took to resolve them and the end results you achieved. Make it a point to clearly explain how your input and efforts positively impacted the sales, operations, staffing or bottom line of your past employer.

The Truth about Embellishing Your Resume

When applying for a new job, it’s not uncommon to be tempted at some point to boost your resume by making your title sound a little fancier, say you’re proficient at certain computer programs you have limited experience with or claim that you’ve managed a bigger team than you have. We’ve all been there.

A survey conducted by CareerBuilder covering more than 2,500 hiring managers showed that 56% have caught job candidates being dishonest on their resumes. The most common exaggeration was the embellishment of skills or capabilities, as well as the scope of responsibilities, with some people going as far as claiming to be employed by companies they never really worked for.

One of the main reasons candidates think they can get away with such behaviour is their hope that the organization does not implement a verification program that can weed out these applications, thereby removing any concern about getting caught red handed. Fortunately, this is no longer the case, as a rapidly growing number of companies have become more aware of the countless risks of not vetting applicant credentials and now adopt robust screening procedures as part of the hiring process.

It’s understandable why job seekers are looking to make their resumes stand out from the crowd, especially in today’s ruthless job market, however, being dishonest is not the right way to do it. In recent years, companies have become more willing to provide training to individuals who are otherwise a good match, even if they lack a specific skill, and now place greater emphasis on soft skills and cultural fit. The takeaway? Stay truthful about your professional strengths and weaknesses because with today’s advanced verification processes, it’s only a matter of time until your new employer finds out about the misleading claims on your resume.

Top 4 Recruiting Challenges

For most businesses, the beginning of the year is a busy time for HR departments and managers. Hiring new staff is not always a smooth process and often comes hand in hand with a number of challenges. Here are four areas of concern businesses will likely face when hiring new employees into their organization:

Finding qualified professionals

Competent and experienced staff are vital to getting the job done effectively, especially given that a significant number of candidates – 56% according to CareerBuilder – opt to tweak or embellish their resumes in order to secure higher positions or better pay in the job they’re seeking.

Making sure they fit into the company culture

Not to downplay the importance of professional skill and experience, it is also crucial that the new employee is aligned with the organization’s corporate culture so as to ensure that productivity and quality levels are not compromised.

Providing adequate training

No matter how qualified or accomplished the candidate is, they still need proper training on the company’s systems and processes in order to ensure that productivity and revenue levels remain unaffected.

Retaining key individuals

Good staff don’t come along too often, so when organizations do find them, holding on to them is extremely important. Many companies assume that financial compensation is the solution; however, research has shown that there are other benefits employees value just as much, if not more, than money. These include a fair work-life balance, as well as personal and career development opportunities.

Here are the top five career resolutions you should consider as a professional for 2018!

Learn something new every day

Make it a point to read an interesting industry article, brainstorm a new work approach with a colleague, try to find a more efficient solution for a persisting issue – just don’t get stuck in the same old routine just because it may seem like the easier option.

Recognize a job well done

In today’s fast paced work environment, interaction with your supervisor may be less frequent, which is why it is important to acknowledge and celebrate your own efforts and achievements, whether it be the successful implementation of a program you were assigned to or the completion of a major project you spearheaded.

Establish a professional network

Actively engage with your colleagues. Attend meetings that may be useful to your department, get in touch with members of other teams and really develop relationships with others as there’s so much to learn.

Step out of your comfort zone

It’s natural to want to stay within the safety of old work patterns and processes, even though we realize there may be room for improving them. However, push the envelope and take a stand – both your colleagues and superiors will admire you for speaking up and taking initiative to come up with a solution.

Take up a new hobby or activity

Have you been wanting to sign up for a baking class or try out kickboxing? Do it! Bringing variety into your personal life is essential to enjoying and excelling in your professional career.

The Rising Trend of Forgery in Global Education

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of international students and academic staff misrepresenting or forging their documents in order to unrightfully attain admission to higher education or immigration status whether for studying or working abroad. This is a major concern for countries regarded as global education destinations as they attract hundreds of thousands of students and academics from around the world for both study and work every year, putting them at greater risk for applicant fraud. If gone undetected, this issue could have damaging implications.

For organizations – including educational institutions – weeding out fraudulent individuals without specialized assistance is a complex task, which is precisely where the implementation of a robust, advanced and accurate background screening process that covers identity, visa, academic, employment, professional and financial credentials becomes imperative, especially when recruiting internationally from high risk countries.

The rising trend of education fraud and fraudulent applications for study and employment is proving to be a growing problem that poses serious internal, financial, regulatory and reputational consequences for institutions and likewise to the safety of society as a whole. Given its powerful track record over the years, the DataFlow Group has been trusted by a growing number of governments and organizations to authenticate applicant documents across various industries, covering critical sectors like education and healthcare where fraudulent applications may result in more severe consequences. To give a clearer picture of the trend we have been observing, since 2007, total DataFlow Group figures for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region alone within a particular sector showed that approximately 92% cases were classified as ‘Positive’, nearly 3% were classified as ‘Negative’ and around 5% were classified as ‘Unable to Verify’.

Realizing the value of conducting rigorous background checks and screening the credentials of applicants for study or employment, organizations across different sectors are vigorously incorporating Primary Source Verification (PSV) to become a routine part of the admission and hiring processes. By doing so, not only do they safeguard their organization against countless internal and external risks associated with document forgery, but they also actively uphold the integrity and protect the admission and employment opportunities of genuine students and academic professionals across the world.
